Water-aerobics
Water aerobics are one of the best ways to get a good workout without causing injuries. Although many people have heard of step aerobics, not everybody is aware that if you have a pool and an instructor, water aerobics may actually be the better exercise. In this article, I will describe the benefits and advantages of water aerobics, especially in comparison with the benefits of regular step aerobics or other forms of exercise.
First, it’s just a great work out.
Most people are unaware that in most cases, you will actually burn more calories in the water than you would if you were doing the aerobics moves on the land. The water creates more drag on your limbs when you work out. This means that your muscles have to work harder to exercise the same way. Therefore, you burn more calories!
The natural buoyancy in water also makes you less aware of how tired you are. This helps you feel like you can keep doing your water aerobics exercises even though you’ve been working out for a long time already.
Second, you’re less likely to injure yourself doing water aerobics.
Other types of aerobic exercises, like jogging , step aerobics and bicycling have a much higher injury rate. These exercises all involve some impact, so if you are overweight, there is a chance that you can hurt your muscles, bones and joints by working them too hard. In the water, your feet never actually strike the ground hard enough to cause any injuries. You also cannot fall over in the water, as the buoyancy will help hold you upright. Therefore, even if you slip or trip, you won’t hurt yourself in the fall.
You will also maintain a much lower heart rate during water aerobics, which should help avoid over exertion of the heart muscle. Additionally, since water aerobics takes place in a cool swimming pool full of water, you will not have to worry about overheating.
How many more calories do you burn in water aerobics? In some cases it can be up to twice as many as you would if you stayed on the ground! Wow!
If you haven’t tried water aerobics yet, they come highly recommended for all of the reasons I have written above. Water aerobics will give you a better workout with a much lower chance of injury, so what are you waiting for?
